Many possibilities.

Your HDD is dead, so it can't find an OS to boot...
Your HDD is OK, but the boot sector is corrupted. You may be able to use Norton Utilities or something similar to fix it.

Find your Windows CD and force a boot from the CD. Then use the CD diagnostics to see if there is a hardware problem which you can fix.

From what you are saying, it sounds like something serious happened to the hard drive, possibly a failure, or maybe the cables are corrupted, but it's really hard to tell from just that. It could be something real small. If you have a desktop, open up the case and make sure all the cables are connected properly, if you know how.
If you can't boot in safe mode, either, well that usually results from what I said above, or could be a system file failure.
The best thing you can do after you have tried what I've said is to re-format the hard drive.

hope this helps and good luck

If it is saying hard drive not found you will need to do several things.

1) If you are at all familiar with working with hardware - open the side of your computer while it is off and make sure the cables running from the motherboard to the hard drive are firmly seated in the sockets. Do not wiggle them side to side to hard, as that can damage the cable or socket.

2) Boot your computer and trigger the Bios Setup screen.

This is usually done by hitting 'Delete' or 'F1" or 'F2' Watch for the command to be listed at start-up for just a couple of seconds. IF it does not say how to get into the Bios program, try hitting the delete key several times after turning on the power.

Once you are in the Bios program, look for an option to find the hard drive. It could be any of several places, depending on the make and model of your computer. If you find it, have it search for the hard drive.

If it can not find the drive, your hard drive may have failed. You will likely need the help of an experienced computer geek to help you install and new drive.

sounds like a bad drive. I cant tell from here but I usually start by plugging in a known good drive and cable to see what I get from BIOS and OS. Then plug the defective drive and cable in a known good computer to see what I have to work with.
From there I will be able to determine if its the drive the cable, the computer or all three.

Has your neighborhood had any power failures in the last couple months?

That happened to me also, I sent it to my PC MAN friend and he said that the hard drives files had become so fragmented that it was too much for it just to open windows. See if anyone at work knows anything about PCs who can help you. If you have backed up your files and programmes then losing your HDD data wont be such a blow but if you havn't i dont know what happens. Sorry i couldnt be of more help

When you boot up, go into the CMOS menu. You typically do this by holding down the delete key after you turn power on. Inside most CMOS menus, you'll find an autodetect function. This will reprogram the chipset to recognize your hard drive(s) and other devices.

Your symptoms are indicative of a failed hard drive, failed (ribbon) connection (to the hard drive) or failed hard drive connection on the motherboard.

Or just possibly the BIOS has become confused about what HD's you have.
