what do you need to do to become an astronaut? (training education)

i'm not thinking of becoming an astronaut or any thing i'm only 12 but i need some info for a project

A Phd is a good start education wise.

Military training is also a plus (Air Force especially)

An engineering degree would help... ALOT !! My uncle worked for NASA during the Mercury / Gemini days at Cape Canaveral in Fla.

A Ph.D degree is not needed. Since some one had mentioned it before.
US citizenship is needed for being an US astronaut.
Good mental health and physical health are needed.

Stay in school, study math and science and get a college education. Also stay in excellent physical condition.

I would say a good majority have been in the military
