It does that to keep your motherboard cool. If it over heats your computer is fried.

The switch is either faulty and needs replacing, or the fan is
just worn out and overheats very quickly. Very cheap and easy to replace, if you're a d i y PC buff like myself. If you are not
very adept at doing these type of jobs - ask a friend to replace
the fan with a new one. It should be inexpensive, just a few pounds.Or you can salvage one from an unused computer,
but the new option is always best, in my opinion.

Its set up for running a slow quiet speed until things heat up then it speeds up. Could be your cpu fan, case fan or video card fan. You can go into bios(usually "delete" upon startup) and turn that feature off if its a case or cpu fan. If it just started happening you may want to open your case and clean all the dust out of the fans.
