I have had pro and con responses, but have pretty much convinced myself to do it. I have even talked with a doctor. I just want to know your opinion? I have always wanted a job in the medical field, but married too young instead. Any other suggestions welcome.

do what makes you happy no matter what age you are. don't let the fact that you're 50 stop you from anything.

I think that is a wonderful idea. As long as you have the good
legs to stand on to do this type of testing, and the strong
back that goes along with the bending over, I'd give it my best
shot. It certainly will be a job with good benefits waiting. As
well as good pay. And you'd get the satisfaction of helping
people since that type of testing is so necessary for disclos-
ing hidden ailments in question. I had an ultra sound not long
ago on a brand new machine. I was only the second person
to use it, I was told. The technician was very proud of having
this new machine. It's only difference she told me, was that
it is lighter and has movable parts that the older ones didn't. So she could maneuver the monitor to rise and lower to show the patient, if necessary. She almost made me feel like I was a VIP to be using this new unit. I also noticed that she didn't
have to use as heavy a hand, as the old ones require. And
it was done faster than any I'd had previously at another
facility.
I envy your changing careers for one you will probably find
more rewarding and you can fulfill your dream somewhat. I
wish you well and know with your enthusiasm, you will do well.
You have the courage so many don't, that stay with the same
dull jobs that just barely pay their bills. And yet, they are too
afraid to quit and move on. So congrats to you!

First 50 is not old. Look ad Colonel Sanders, who started Kentucky Fried Chicken. Don't' EVER listen to negativity. Keep away from negative people. You are never too old to go and do something you have wanted to do and I would just go ahead and do it. After all, it is on your heart, and always has been. Now, if your family is off our hands, don't let anything stop you. Just do it, and you will find that you have fulfilled a life long dream. And don't put it off. You will feel an amazing satisfaction when you have completed the course, and actually start working in this field. I always wanted to do Architecture, but life turned out differently. Now I paint, usually a lot of building scenes, and portraits. And I took it up as a therapeutic pass time after the shock of my husband's death at 45 years old. nd people hav even baught some of them, although I give most away as presents.

Texas Rose, I say, "Go for it!". Who says your too old? 50 aint old. Age is sooo much a frame of mind. My parents are in their 70's, but acted old in their 30's! I'm 48 and a half! I love being my age, 'cept for the perimenopausal thing, which I could do without thank you...Just a month ago, I got myself a boob job! I know most ladies get that kind of work done earlier, but hey, I got boobs now! I'm a gramma, which I love, love, love! The kids are grown, the house will be paid for in twenty years..ha, and life is now ours to do what we want. I know a lovely lady who is 93. Her kids got her a computer. It sat for months because she didn't think she could learn how to use it. Well, at 93, she's such a computer nerd! She's 40 years older than us. So, the sky's the limit! Go get yourself that new career!

You are not too old and I hope you never set limitations on yourself. I am 55 and I had left the work force for many years to work in my family's private business, when my marriage of 20 years failed I went back into my medical field and I am 55. They were glad to get me even at this age. We tend to be more serious and grounded. You will do well, stay positive. I am an LPN.

There was a field I wanted to into @ 50, I didn't, reason because I was 50. And I regreted I did not take the risk!

You're definitely not too old, but you might want to investigate the job market in your area before you spend money on the course. Maybe there is a less competitive area of med-tech work that you would also enjoy. If this is really your dream, though , go for it! If they refuse to hire a 50 year old freshman - sue them for age discrimination!

I am a cardiovascular technologist with 26 years in cardiac ultrasound. My lab would not hire a 50yo "freshman" ultrasound tech due to the learning curve and differences in the thought process. If you can get a commitment from a physician to hire you after you graduate, then go for it, as it is a great field to be in, but don't expect a lot of respect from other techs in the area. It is a very highly competative field that requires hours of continuing education, overtime and on-call. That, the o/t and call, is usually the back breaker for most 50yo techs. Plus, you will have a tougher time in school as most of the 19-26yo's in the program will not have any common ground with you and thereby creating a huge generation gap. Be strong! Do what you want to do and go full force ahead. Good luck.

Excellant choice. Most people at that age would like a change of life, as in careers. And most don't know where to start. At least you chose a very good field. You will never run out of work and the pay isn't that bad. Go for it.
