Is the idea of co-operating with the French and Germans demeaning to us? Are we stuck hopelessly in the past? What happens if (in terms of our economy) the **** hits the fan?

The EU was set as a trading bloc. It is now turning into a 'United States of Europe' with unelected officials able to decide on common laws and rights within the union without consultation of member states. It is undemocratic and it will not come to pass.

Because we can see right through their nastly little plan!!The European Commission are unelected reject politicians with no accountability to anybody. A group which can and does wield such power that it affects almost every aspect of the daily lives of many people. Unlike the British Parliament, the EU Parliament cannot introduce, modify or initiate new laws. It cannot elect a government. The functions of EU government are performed not by the EU Parliament, but by three powerful EU forums (the EU Commission, the Council of Europe and the Council of Ministers), in conjunction with the European Court of Justice and the European Central Bank. The EU Parliament is widely recognised as toothless – rubber-stamping legislation that is put before it with no informed debate on these new laws.
The EU Parliament has the appearance of democracy, but upon closer inspection, the truth is very different. It is a beard for another type of regime that really calls the shots from Brussels: one that is fundamentally unaccountable, undemocratic, unelectable and corrupt. Enough said...

I don't think the French or Germans are an issue with us, after all its they who have the problem with us not the other way around.
Because we are an island race our way of life differs from theirs in a lot of ways and really I still prefer the British way of doing things like drainage etc. I like being British!

The common market was supposed to be just that. It has now turned into an undemocratic ruling state. Too much power in the hands of too few. It dictates every part of our lives and it will become even more dictatorial as time passes. Even the good things about Britain, the bits that are better here than on the Continent will not be safe from change, and we just foot the bill for changes we didn't ask for and don't want

Be prepared to lose a lot of freedoms that we now take for granted we have already seen a lot of our way of life disappear.

No thanks I don't want anything to do with it! Brussels, where all the elected members are out for what they can get.

Your question fails right from the very beginning. First of all, England is not a member of the EU - the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is.

Secondly, who told you we are not a great power any more? We are the fourth or fifth largest economy in the world - not largest per capita, largest full stop. Have a look at the size of the UK on a globe and marvel at how that can be, given our physical size.

Our armed forces are the admiration of the world, as is our system of government, which has been copied by a great many countries in every continent. The same applies to our legal system.

Immigrants cross the borders of many other European countries to get to the UK quite simply because it is the best country in Europe.

Conversely, in France and Germany they have huge problems with their state systems and the Euro as a currency, although very convenient, has suffered in comparison with other currencies, whereas sterling is very strong.

The EU has not had its accounts cleared for years, quite simply because of corruption. Billions of pounds/euros are unaccounted for. The Parliament is a toothless tiger, all decisions being made by the unelected Commissioners. Germany and France are in collusion against Britain and are determined to be the dominating force in Europe.

Finally, the British people have been lied to by every Government since Ted Heath's about the purposes of the EU. We joined as trading partners, and nothing more, yet we are being led into a federal Europe against the wishes of the people and without any say against the decisions that are being made in secret against our wishes.

We like our Independence.

We still get on with the EU. We were one of the founding countries.

Plus we are the only EU country off the continent. Maybe that still has a little impact.

Economically we are a strong power that doesn't have anything to do with the EU. In fact Germany is bigger than us in this sense so it has nothing to do with that in my opinion.

If the proverbial s**t hits the fan the EU won't save us. The EU won't save anyone, but it is a useful organisation to be a member of.

this great EU ally. refused to help during the Falklands war when we had our territory invaded. further more!! the French continued to sell our enemy the Exocet missiles to fire at our soldiers all through the conflict and the EU did nothing to stop them. by the time they decided to act, the war was over... people seem to have short memories in this country. there is no democracy in the EU. we will lose our rights completely. you will have no say WHAT SO EVER!! in the running of your country. if by joining, we wouldn't have to have Parliament. MPs house of lords etc. i could get my head around it......but we don't loose the crooks. we don't loose the hangers on. we still have to pay them to sit and do bugger all and have no power. no real influence. no function SAVE!! to be on a very high wage and lots of EU bonuses for doing nothing. we are not a huge land mass like Europe is.....we cannot cope with an open border policy. and this fact!! should be a warning to all British people. the EU will not take in to account that' we are an island' in they're rules. they will not let us NOW! or in the future! close our borders. we will become swamped with immigration. its not a case of being stuck in the past. the fact is that with the current nombers migrating to Britain. we will be a massive concrete island within 50 years. we are allready surrendering our green belt land to house immigrants whilst at the same time neglecting to house our own people.

maybe it's because this government is too keen on giving Brussels the right to tell us how to live our lives, a referendum would let politicians know we can think for ourselves. We like the fact we control most aspects of life without interference from the eu but Brown and co don't want to risk a defeat and lose face.....so we are gradually losing our sovereignty.

No, the EU is anti democratic and dictatorial give them long enough and like Imperial measure they will destroy the rest of our culture. The continental politicians hate us for either beating them when they started an war, or rescuing them from the oppressor. They will rip us off as long as we have politicians who accept bribes to keep us in with out a referendum on the matter.

I think England should get on the EU. I've lived in Germany and Holland, and it seems to be working very well (certainly kicking the crap out of the US Dollar for a long time!)
PS: Isn't Ireland undergoing an economic "miracle"? Didn't they start using the Euro a few years back?
