Depends on what type of Engineer you are and on your employer.

In most cases you don't need one; however, there is a professional Engineering exam.
Engineers heavily involved with safety and public-related work (say construction) are usually required to take the exam.

Don't know about all states, but in New Hampshire, to hang a shingle, you need a PE (Professional Engineer) license. There are many sorts of engineers, so you'll need to look specifically for the sort of engineer position you are talking about.

Here in New Hampshire, the PE exam includes a great deal about civil engineering. Even though a person might be an electronic or software engineer, one needs to pass the same exam as a civil engineer. It's weird.

I don't know. My father was an aerospace engineer whose degree was in aeronautics in the 1940s. He was a member of two or three professional organizations related to his work, the first being The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE, from which we get the standards prior to metrics).

I think your degree is what matters. If you're thinking of opening a business, more may be required. Remember, your local chamber of commerce is always ready to answer. Friendly people.
