The exact rules will vary, as there are literally dozens of variations of poker.
5 card or 7 card?, draw, stud, or hold 'em? Limit or no limit? "Texas Hold 'em" is what is shown most on TV, but even it has deiffernet variations ("limit" versus "no Limit") There are literally dozens of variations of poker.
The only think that stays the same is the ranking of the hands to determine the winner.
Here is the ranking of hands (highest to lowest):
5 of a kind (when using a "wild card") (ex: 5 "3"'s)
Straight Flush (ex: 8,9,10,J,Q of the same suit)
4 of a Kind (ex: 4 3's)
Full House (3 of a Kind plus One Pair, such as 2 K and 3 4's)
Flush (same suit, but not sequential, such as 2,5,7,8,J of hearts)
Straight (sequential, but not same suit, such as 2,3,4,5,6, but 2 and 5 are diamonds, 3 and 4 are hearts, and 6 is a spade)
Three of a kind (ex: 3 "3";s)
Two Pair (fairly self explanatory)
One pair
no pairs (in the unlikely event that this is the winning hand, you go by whoever has the highest card)
If all players have the same rank of hand, highest cards win (in the case of a full house, the "roof" [3 of a kind] is the decider)
