In ordering ADSL, companies offer various ranges of Mb. In some places here it ranges from 1 Mb to 25. Usually less. The price is accordingly. But how is one to know one isn't being cheated? Is there a way to find out? Mac OSX, 10.1.10 is being used.

Now this is very tricky thing, you can check the speed as some website provide this service but that may not be very reliable either but can give you some idea how much bandwidth you are given.

I am in Europe & I usually use

http://www.speedtest.nl/TestSuite/TestController.asp

(The website is in Dutch), you can google for more & test your speed on few of them to have an idea about your connection speed.

There sure is Google Internet Speeds.
You will find several that will give you free Internet Speed Checks, Then you know weather you are being cheated or not. I have found that all and all they are pretty good and most of the larger and more reputable don't cheat there clients on purpose.
Just to give you another heads up. Mac OSX 10.1 was a very early version almost 5 years ago and they have come a long way since 10.1 and there were some problems with it. 10.3 and 10.4 have been the most stable and trouble free.
Now with the introduction of 10.5 you might consider upgrading.

You run a test of your internet speed at places like
http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/
You should see about 80% of your connection speed because DSL uses about 20% for authenication etc. They make enough money without having to cheat you!!!

Test you line speed using a website, and check your connection speed on your router's status interface.
