Here's a good link for information about Samhain. It answers all your questions.

Are you talking about Irish Gaelic or Scottish?

In Ireland, Samhain is the Irish word for October, and it's pronounced 'sow' (as in ow, that hurts) - in'. Hallowe'en is from old English, what was originally 'All Hallows' Even', hallows being saints.

Pagans who celebrate Samhain believe that this is the night when the boundaries between the world of the living and the world of the dead are lifted and the dead can come back to visit the living, which I think is a lovely idea.

Both Wiccans and Druids can come under the category of Pagan.

Did someone mention Gaelic lads & lasses?
Haven't seen too many around here of late.
Guess the old Scot has hoof rot.
Or she is still in confinement.

A friend of mine who is pagan (Wiccan) told me that it is not pronounced the way it looks. She said it is pronounced "sow-win". I believe it's celebration had something to do with the harvest.
