I have a cousin that owns his own jewelry store. He is a jeweler and a gemologist. I think if this side character only works with the jewelery - like rings and mounts (things like that) then she's a jeweler. If she selects gemstones based on their cut, clarity, and weight, then she is a gemologist.

A person who works in a jewelry store is a jeweler. Also can be a gemologist. Henry Winston is a Master Gemologist.
