The movie is about an African American who is contracted by a white guy to kill some people. He only collects payment on the first of January for all the killings. There was a little girl in the movie and she had this red book I think it is a really good movie I can't remember the name.

American X maybe; is it a recent movie? Know the actors possibly? I was thinking of this one movie about this one assassin dude and theres this little girl around him all the time; that little girl was natalie portman; i forget the actor who played the assassin; some russian dude; i was thinking that was the movie you were talking about but clearly you say the assassin dude is African American. So thats probably not it. Any more details you remember?
