Should I use the rectangular attachment that the old one had or buy a round one? The round duct only measures 6in but hood calls for 7in.

Go with the manufacturer's specs. always. It will only cause bigger problems if you don't!

Sigh,,, change isn't a promise of EASY,,,BUT,,, ROUND often comes in FLEX type. similar to a clothes dryer vent tube; allowing FLEX.

No offense but consider this; You're venting air; and by the time it gets to the fan, then the vent tubing; it's still just air. More important might be the power of the fan. 6 inch; 7 inch; 3 feet, isn't going to matter; other than the exit hardware.

I want so much to assume that there are instructions. I want so much to assume that some suggestions are included as to using what is appropriate in the manufacture. Obviously a rectangular venting system will be more restrictive, in that it wont FLEX, but in some measure it depends on WHERE and HOW you intend to open a hole to the exterior wall...unless you assume venting to an attic? You state clearly that the connection point for venting on the new is ROUND...why would you consider altering the manufacturers design, or intent?

Make your life easy! Change the vent cover to suit the new vent pipe.
