I've kept fish for more than 25 years, and the only thing I really know for certain is that I have MUCH more to learn about keeping fish!! I

Your question will probably be taken more seriously if you're a bit more humble.

I'm not the greatest typist in the world, nor am I am great speller. However, I'm having a very difficult time understanding what you are asking. Will you edit your question and try to be a bit more specific regarding exactly what you'd like to know?

Evidently diatom filters have gone the way of the dinosaur, since so few people seem to know what you're asking about. This is what the person asking the question is referring to: http://www.diatomfilters.com/index1.html

By using diatomaceous earth (dead diatoms) as the media, these can filter out very small particles (down to 4 hundred thousandths of an inch - that's 0.00004 inches), even many parasites. Since diatoms have a coat of silica (essentially spikes of glass) any small living thing passing through is killed. Because they can remove such small particles, the water is crystal clear, hence the term "water polishing".

In all reality, you don't see these as much in the hobby as you did several years ago, but they are still around. I did have one of these at one time and they are good at what they are intended to do. The are a bit of a nuisance in that mine wasn't self-priming and always clouded the water when it started up. There was also some concern that the silica could feed a new diatom bloom in the tank.

As long as you're using this in combination with another filter, it's okay to run it just periodically. Bet you have as clear of water as many other aquarists wish they did. If you don't have any problems with it (mine eventually became too much of a leaker), keep on using it.
