Water or wet mopping or excessive water causes wood grain to raise and the wood to expand, crack, splinter and possibly, produce mildew as in your case
or it could just be that you don't have adequate ventilation under the floors there for keeping a damp environment under the floor (it would pay to get it checked out) as this mildew is not good to be breathing in on a daily bases
mildew grows in areas that hold excess moisture and mildew produces a musty odour that's why your house smells like that
mop with a mixture of one cup vinegar to one gallon water. when mopping, be sure to remove any excess water from the mop the vinegar will kill the mildew
Wood floors will respond noticeably to changes in humidity level in the home, especially in the winter. A humidifier will help
furniture legs Install proper floor protectors will help keep mildew of them and protect your wood floor
this will keep the mildew at bay but you need to find the source of the damp

For a niche that small, you're possibly extra desirable off in simple terms filling it, as long as this is shorter than a meter or so. from now on than that, and it must be worth changing the entire board, yet that turns a twenty minute project right into an afternoon's paintings. in case you have spare products of it, that makes it plenty much less stressful for you. in simple terms take between the shorter ones in with you to the ironmongery shop, so which you would be able to evaluate it to the samples of stain. Get a wood putty, heavily fill the crack and enable it dry, sparkling it off and soft it down, and prepare the closest matching stain you will discover with a small brush or Qtip. If it fairly is a sprint darker than the board next to it, it fairly is effective, it will look as though a knot interior the wood or a depressing spot interior the grain.

It's an old joke but true, but could it be rising damp?
If it is, it's no joke!
Have you told your land lord.?It's in his best interests to get it sorted.
-DANGER SIGNALS-
If he's not interested in sorting out, he wants you out.
(Don't try telling him capitalism is crime, it never works!)
