silk, spices, jewels, and riches from china and india were very valuable. the problem was that when they arrived in western europe, the products had been taxed so many times along the way that they were extremely expensive. they wanted to find a route around so that they could get the goods first, similarly to how car dealerships get cars from the factory, then raise the prices for the customer. thus, they wanted to find a northwest passage.

Spice baby spice. OK, here is a simple explanation. Traders from Asia had entered Europe but by land. They brought a lot of fabulous items that Europeans found valuable, including the use of gold in every day items. How tempting that must have been. The spices they brought enabled people to mask the horrible taste of meat that was kept too long and infused the rather bland diet of the times, not to mention preserving wine and other foods. European royalty was not to be denied these exotic and valuable items.

How to get more of these products sparked a long period of exploration. If they could sail west, from Europe, wouldn't they be able to land in Asia and simply load their ships with all these goodies? No need to cross over mountains and through the deserts. And they could trade their goods without those pesky middlemen traders. After all, kings dealt with kings.

The rest is the history of invasion for people in the Caribbean and eventually the North and South Continents to be known as the "New World".

Finding a new route to India (or to what was then called “The Indies” and is now known as Indonesia) was important during this time for economic reasons. A new route to India would be profitable for whoever found it. This is why Columbus was searching for such a route.
Trading with the Indies was very lucrative because the islands had spices. Spices were very valuable and could not be gotten anywhere else. The spice trade had to come overland and was dominated by the Muslims. Countries like Portugal and Spain therefore looked for routes to India, first around Africa and then, as with Columbus, through sailing west.

materials coming from Asia to Europe would go to five groups of merchants and they raised prices every time it went from one merchant to another. It would go from Asia, to Middle East , Greece, Italy and then France. So instead of paying so much money for stuff, they decided to find different trade routes and it worked, plus they could buy more materials cheap this way. Also it took the middle men out in between trading of merchants.

THE THINGS MOST DESIRED BY EUROPE FROM THE FAR EAST WERE SPICES, SILKS, GOLD, AND JEWELS AND IT COST A FORTUNE TO SHIP THEM OVERLAND. A CAMEL WILLONLY CARRY ABOUT 300 POUNDS AND WHEN THE COST INCURRED ON THE MERCHANTS BY BANDITS AND TAXES AND BRIBES WAS FIGURED IN THESE GOODS WERE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE WHEREAS A SHIP COULD CARRY 10'S OR PERHAPS 100'S AS MUCH AS A CAMEL CARAVAN AND DO IT MUCH QUICKER AND WITHOUT THE EXTRA COSTS INVOLVED WITH A CAMEL CARAVAN.

As most of their food was more or less rotten they desparately needed spices to hide the taste and to hide their body odour. Asia or there abouts was where they found the spices and fought many a war to get their hands on them.
