I have cable internet on my family computer, and I'm getting a computer for my room. I have cable plugs in every room and I wanted to know if I buy a cable modem for the store, will it work on my cable plug or would I have to call the cable company for another modem?

the modem's have serial #'s that are pre-approved to get on their network

you can't just buy your own equipment and plug it in for modems

what you CAN do is buy a router that plugs into the ethernet port of the modem and then divide that signal to as many pc's as you desire

think of a router as a coax cable tv splitter

you can go with a wired router for $20 from pricegrabber in which you'll need to plug in ethernet cable to every device or go with a wireless router in which everything that has a wireless card in it will be online plus you can also connect via ethernet cable as well for $20 from pricegrabber

Hi

No, it wont work that way. Here is the way to make it work.

1 get a wireless router for FAMILY and wireless network card for YOURROOM. Some other wireless devices that you have already in the house may conflict. Before you buy wireless, write down the GHZ (for example 2.4 GHZ cordless phones) and tell your router salesman that you want one that wont conflict with your phones or other wireless stuff you have already. Some of these routers are good horizontally but not verticly. Also watchout for interference between the 2 rooms caused by electrical wiring, heat and cooling ducts, etc. In some houses I have had to run wire to get around interference just to make wireless work. Sometimes you might as well run wire from the start and be done with it. But if you really have to have your laptop beside the pool wireless is the way to go.

Anyway the way it works is the internet comes in to the home through the cable (to 1 cable modem only) per house. Then you go from the cable modem to the router. The router is very smart it allows more than 1 computer to connect to the internet at the same time.

You can only use one cable modem per line. You need a router to split the signal from the modemto different machines.

It would work, but you can only have 1 modem on at a time.Same goes for routers. It would be best if you just purchase a router or a splitter:

and hook up your PC that way.Or you can buy a wireless router and a wireless card and you wont have to run the cables all the way to your room.

It should, but you would have to have a net service that uses cable. Normaly if you sign on to a cable service they give you the cable modem for free.
