We keep her cage clean, lots of hay and chew toys and her cage is really big for her to run around in. My vet couldn't get over how mean she is! He said he'd never seen one like her. Any ideas on what could be wrong or is that just her personality? :) Thanks

There's a reason they're called lionheads you know. ;- )
Some bunnies are just mean, just like some people. Who knows why? If you got her from a pet store or an irresponsible breeder, it may be the reason. Most good breeders will try to breed for good personalities, but some breeders just try to produce as many rabbits as possible to get the most profit. I'm not saying that's necessarily the reason, but genetics has a lot to do with an animal's personality.

If you're taking good care of her, you are probably not the problem in this situation. Just try to spend a lot of time with her and don't ever react with anger or she'll just get afraid of you. Maybe with some time she'll be more sociable.

As a long time rabbit breeder of several other breeds, I can tell you that sometimes, any breed of rabbit has the potential to do this. I have had many. Some it was due to their previous environment, and I tried to work it through with them, others I never had any luck. My suggestion, try to win her over with treats, apple, pineapple, carrot, a bit of banana, or a couple cheerios maybe, everytime you touch the cage, give her a treat. For awhile just feed and water, and when you clean the cage, try to minimize her stress, move her to a holding box for the time being. It may be a no win situation, but I would try some of those things.

I have one that is a bit mean too. We have worked things through with her and been able to minimize it now. She is probably more mean inside her cage because many rabbits are territorial. Try letting her out and sitting on the floor quietly with her. Scratch your fingers on the floor in front of her and if he lowers her head down to the floor then give her head a scratch. Stay away from her chin and he bum area, these are sensitive spots. You can also offer tasty treats like bits of apple or dried fruits like papaya. The more quiet time you spend with her the more she will be comfortable with you, but she will probably always be on the aggressive side.

Check out www.rabbit.org and look in the behaviour section as well. Also, the page http://www.muridae.com/rabbits/rabbittalk.html talks about body language of rabbits which is often the key to helping a skittish bunny feel happier. Good luck!

My uncle and his friend raised Lionheads for a few years. Most of them were like this. This is also common for hormonal does. If you want bunnies, get her bred; if you don't get her fixed(which will also prevent uterine cancer in the future). She might also be territorial. If this is the case, then put your hand on her shoulders to keep her down while you feed her. After awhile, this usually teaches territorial rabbits that you're dominant.

I had some female rabbits that got very angry as adults.
You might want to try getting her spayed and see if that doesn't fix her temperament somewhat. It really helped a New zealand I have that was always grouchy. She's much better now that she's spayed. Still not the friendliest bunny in the world, but, she no longer attacks me. Now she just hops away when she doesn't want to be messed with instead of trying to take my hand off with bunny karate..

I'm afraid it's just her personality - lionheads are NOTORIOUS for being little b*ggers! My friend keeps them, she's had some monsters - her favourite just lived to bite people.

I'm afraid rabbits are very often not cuddly little er - bunnies, they're often little monsters!

female rabbits have two attitudes, cute and cudly, or mean. most of them will only be mean cause thier teritorial. does are just like women they can be moody. one suggestion is if she's old enough she has major hormones flying and she needs a boy friend. usually breeding them and letting them raise a litter calms them down alot.
