When I was in Vietnam and served as a LOH door gunner. I tried to make an enemy soldier NVA to surrender. H ewould not and up to that point in my life, I had never shot and killed another person. I did that day and actually had five more confirmed kills KIA that day. I thought I was prepared to do thtat. However the entire episode took maybe three or four minutes I think. I saw the hatred in his eyes and the defiant look on his face as he accepted death over being a prisoner. I think that was the moment I lost my innocence as a young adult. His face stays with me after all these years. this was 1970.

I learned alot about death and life and suddenly all the things I had been witnessing and eating sunk in and a lightbulb went on in my head.
