Don't underestimate the ideological pull and popular political appeal of an ideology that states by pursuing your own self interest your are also contributing to the common good. Read Adam Smith "The Wealth of Nations".

I am not a conservative by any means, but two things I have learned in politics is to never underestimate your opponent and never fall for your own propaganda.

I say - anyone who thinks he has all the answers is a fool.

There are conservatives who are very bright and have good ideas. There are also conservatives who are idiots and have horrible, destructive policy prescriptions.

There are those on the left who are bright and have good ideas. There are those on the left who are morons and whose ideas are the most ill-conceived, Bambi-world view nonsense.

Ideology does constrain a person's thinking, but it's been largely demonsrated by cognitive psychologists that humans prefer a consistent ethos to an inconsistent one.

Also, there was a recent article in the Economist that reported on brain research that suggested a correlation between brain structure, cognitive strategy, and political persuasion. Correlation is not causation, so it's not clear whether your brain develops one way and causes your political beliefs, i.e., you're either born conservative or you're not, or whether your political beliefs (as well as other beliefs) form your cognitive and hence physical brain structure.

Under Cameron, the Conservative Party has no ideology. It reacts to events, rather than trying to lead, and selects policy on the basis of what it thinks might win an election, rather than any idea of ideology.

Still, it worked for Blair!

Well, you might find it interesting to discover that some conservatives would agree with you.

They would say that conservatism is indeed "stupid" in that its based on common sense. It doesn`t go for fancy French sociological theories, or Marxist doctrines.

Conservatism is about looking at what works, asking why, and following on from there.

"If it ain`t broke, don`t fix it" is a typical conservative slogan.
It might be unimaginative, but it makes good sense.

I would say that you don't know the slightest thing about conservative ideology. You've heard somebody else say that it's stupid and you're engaged in a favorite liberal strategy, parroting.

I didn't realise they had one! In fairness to them, Labour are utterly bereft of any kind of new ideas to the degree that they have to resort to thieving the tories ideas. Most politicians are a bunch of career monkey, media-serving, Westminster-obsessed handjob-merchants. And the media are a bunch of money-grubbing, up-their-own-anuses, London-centric suckers of their own man-glands too!

Goddamit! When haven't any of them had a proper job?

Do they have an ideology at all?
If so it must be based on self serving inaction, complacency and indifference to others needs. (Except their chums in the city)

Well it works, for the rich.

Conservatism is theory that the masses must be a working comodity of the elite few.

I wonder why so many poor people dont undersatnd that and take their country back. Apathy maybe.
