sqrt(2x + 3) - 5 = -2
sqrt(2x + 3) = 3
2x + 3 = 9 {square both sides}
2x = 6
x = 3

When you square both sides during a solution, be careful that you did not get an extraneous root

sqrt(6 + 3) - 5 = - 2
3 - 5 = - 2
- 2 = - 2
