I own a 92 pontiac bonneville SSE v6. While driving in interstate AC started to blow hot air, turned it off for .5 h, seemed ok afterwards. Next day I noticed squeaky noise, compressor's pully seems to stop for a sec and then goes on. AC off, sound still present. AC on, cold air. Mechanic said compressor needs to be replaced. AC IS cooling now, only noise is present, not loud though, but I can see belt stop for a sec. Could it be something else goin on?

if the belt quits going around when the compressor is kicked in then the bearing to the compressor is going out. it wont be long before it quits all together and the belt will break. your mechanic is right about needing it replaced.

Don't play these guessing games and spend a bundle on some "mekaniks" guess. Find a shop that specializes in a/c work. stay away from dealers and auto repair. they will rip you off. Your a/c clutch may need some work. If you getting cold air it's not comp.

Probably the AC clutch is damaged duo to high speed in high way. if that is the case, it can be repaired. But not all the mechanics willing to do that.
