Mona Lisa is named for Lisa del Giocondo who was most likely the sitter.[7] Lisa was a member of the Gherardini family of Florence and Tuscany who married Francesco del Giocondo, a successful silk merchant. The painting was commissioned for their new home and to celebrate the birth of their second son, Andrea.[8]

it is also thought that it may be a self-portrait, I saw a documentary, where they took da vinci's facial features and matched them to the Mona Lisa, they matched up.
