Lift off the gas and pull the next gear. aka Sync Shifting

Some racing shifters are setup so you just shift straight back and forth---the shift pattern is not side by side but up and down so you have to lift the shifter handle and pull back or push forward to engage a lower gear like 1st or 2nd. You start in first gear which is up and forward....as you shift, you only need to pull back for second, push forward again for third..the shifter internal linkage will automatically drop down to catch third and then pull back for fourth. Gate stops are the physical stops or adjustable screws built into the shifter that stop it from going too far past where the shifter rods need to move the trans levers to shift from one gear to another.
Use to have one like that by Hurst on my 69 Camaro SS 427 4 speed---great for racing as you can't miss a gear like a regular shifter when speed shifting is important.
