other planets (and planetoids) are thought to have formed in the early solar system.
The heavy metals (iron) would have sunk to the center, creating an iron core, Just like Earth.

Tidal forces or collisions then broke up these planets long ago.

Thus you have many stoney chuncks, as well as a handful of iron cores floating about.
