He was a Florentine monk alive about 1500. He thought that all the luxuries the rich Florentines indulged in were horribly sinful, and that even taking pleasure in paintings was sinful. He organized a public bonfire to burn fabrics, books, paintings, rugs, and jewelry. This very much irritated the Medicis, who were the foremost patrons of art in Florence.
The Medicis got him convicted for heresy and had him burned at the stake. After that Florentines went back to their pleasure loving ways.
