He was afraid that they would rise against him, so every child born of him would be sacrified. Cronos was led to his downfall however, as his final child was swapped at the alter and dcarried to a safe place by a great eagle, who left him in Gaya's care until he became an man. He then rose up against Cronos.

Cronus castrated and killed his father Uranus who cursed him as he died saying that his son would overthrow him as he had overthrown his own father. Cronus or Cronos did eat his first 5 kids by Rhea, but she wrapped a stone in swaddling clothes and gave it to him, instead of their 6th child, Zeus. Zeus was reared and guarded by the Curetes who clashed their spears against their shields when he cried to keep Cronus from hearing. Naturally, when Zeus grew up, with the help of Rhea, he gave Cronus an emetic, and he vomited up Zeus' sisters: Hera, Demeter and Hestia and his brothers: Poseidon and Hades. As we see, Rhea helped Zeus all along. There was a ten year war, and Zeus and his siblings and their allies, the Hekatoncheires (100-handed giants) and the Cyclops (one-eyed giants) beat Cronos and the Titans. Someone has made errors I see. Kronus and Chronos (or Cronus and Chronos) are not the same. Uranus was the one mutilated, i.e castrated. His sexual organs were thrown into the sea by Cronus. Some say this is how Aphrodite was born, but others say she was the daughter of Zeus and Dione. Cronus and most of the Titans were punished in Tartarus, except Atlas, strongest of them, was condemned to bear the sky.

Cronus learned from Gaia and Uranus that he was destined to be overcome by his own son, just as he had overthrown his father. As a result, although he sired the gods Demeter, Hera, Hades, Hestia, and Poseidon by Rhea, he swallowed them all as soon as they were born to preempt the prophecy. When the sixth child was born, Zeus, Rhea sought Gaia to devise a plan to save them and to eventually get retribution on Cronus for his acts against his father and children. Rhea secretly gave birth to Zeus in Crete, and handed Cronus a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes, also known as the Omphalos Stone, which he promptly swallowed, thinking that it is his son. Rhea kept Zeus hidden in a cave on Mount Ida, Crete.

Kronos (or Chronos-"time") ate his children because he murdered his father (Ouranos, Uranus-it's a Greek word meaning "sky", and the spelling is variable) and was told that one of his children would murder him and take his place just as he had done.

His children did not die, since they were gods and therefore immortal (not unkillable, just very, very difficult to kill). They remained in his stomach, in stasis. But his wife, Rhea, was sick of him eating their children, so when Zeus was born, she hid him away and gave Kronos a rock wrapped in swaddling clothes. This fooled him (apparantly he wasn't too bright), and so Zeus lived to grow up and kill his father in turn, and take his place.

Before Zeus killed him, he had his mother give Kronos a poison (think ipecac syrup) which made him vomit up his children (the brothers & sisters of Zeus), who were still babies. They grew up and became the other gods, who replaced the Titans.

Kronos was dismembered by Zeus, who scattered the pieces so that he would really, really die. However, Zeus threw his father's penis into the sea, and from this Aphrodite (the goddess of carnal love) was born.

Rhea is not mentioned much in later stories. She simply fades into the background.

There are, of course, variations of this story since it is folklore and was passed down through oral tradition.

The Greek Titain right? He ate them because he was scared they were going to take him over like he did his father. His wife Rhea hid one of thier sons (AKA Zeus.) When Zeus grew up, he defeated his dad and got his brothers and sisters back. That ain't the whole story though.

Because he knew one of his kids would get strong enough to overthrow him, just like he did and kicked Uranus off the throne.

As for Rhea, his wife, she ran to Mother Earth, or Gaea, and asked her to help save her sixth child, Zeus, from his dad...and Zeus survived, grew up, and kicked his dad out of town.

He ate them because it was foretold that one of his sons would destroy him. Turns out, the prophecy was right, as his wife gave him a stone to swallow instead of the child and he vomited them all out. Zeus was the son that eventually destroyed him.

Cronos ate his children (except for Zeus) because he was afraid they would overthrow him. http://www.godchecker.com/pantheon/greek-mythology.php?deity=CRONUS

Rhea was safe under the protection of her son, Zeus.
