Each DirecTV receiver has it's own card inside that identifies it to the DirecTV service. The card has to be activated on the service to work, and you have to pay for the card to be activated. In other words, you have to pay the $5 for each box.

There will be an additional cost .

They should both be hooked to a telephone line.
That way they can check to see if the units are at the same address.

I think the additional fee is $5.00

No. Whether you rent a box or buy one they're still going to have to activate your card in order for the box to work.

Expect the $5 hit.
