Today I found out that my rental office I lived 4 years ago, put me to in the collection. The problem is I never knew about it. They tell me that I owe $500 because I didn't pay. But when I was renting apartment there 2 years ago and they didn't tell me anything. Never notice. never collection letters I just found out that they put me in there. I wanna open case but don't know what to do.

I had a similar situation where an apartment I lived in had a collection company contact me a year or so after I moved out saying I owed back rent. I faxed them a copy of the stub from the deposit refund check. The issue was closed.

Debt collection laws protect you in situations like this. You can demand the collection agency send you proof. If they don't provide it, then you can take recourse.

I would also check your credit report.

Tell the collection agency to send you the documents which indicate you own the $500, if not, tell them you will sue them for extortion.
