These are some of the names of women that come to my mind that have been either president or prime minister in their countries: Benazir Bhutto; Corazon Aquino; Margaret Thatcher; Indira Ghandi; Golda Meir; Violeta Chamorro; Michelle Bachellet; etc. I know this is only a handful of women, since I don't have time to look the others up.
But why, what is the real reason there has never been a female president in the USA up till now? After all, we are supposed to be if not the best country in the world, at least in the very top five.
Aren't we supposed to be the most equal in relation to school, college, etc. Aren't we suppose to be the one with more freedom of everything, including speech, thought, actions? But some of the countries we've called Banana Republics have had women presidents.

I'm a liberal democrat and I think Hillary has absolutely no chance of winning a general election. None whatsoever. ZERO chance. So your gonna have to keep waiting. Maybe President Giuliani will be somewhat better than Bush.
The only hope is John Edwards and he cant win the primary....so.....bla.

Up until 1920 women in the united states didn't even have the vote. Up until 1940 the saying ( a women's place is in the home ) wasn't just a saying. It was pretty much fact. It wasn't until 1970 that women really started working outside the home in large numbers. So it has only been 37 years that women have gained financial Independence. With that independence has come equality , but it has taken time to translate that equality into political gains. That old saying still has believers and they are hard to overcome in important political contests.

I certainly hope you don't vote for Hillary just because she is a woman. There are much more pressing issues in the country than having a woman president. If you feel she is the best person for the job, then go for it. Just make sure you place your vote for the right reasons.
By the way, I think a few of those women you mentioned weren't necessarily 'voted' in, but 'born' in to their position.

Because until recently many people would not vote for a woman, and I fear their are are still enough that feel that way to keep Hilary from winning. It doesn't matter what Conservatives think, because they will vote Republican in any case. The problem will be with Democrats over 50, especially men, who formed their attitudes in a world where a woman place was in the home, and believe woman can't do math and don't understand complicated things.

We don't have a female President in the USA, yet. We have a female candidate, but not a President. That being said, Hillary will win the '08 election unless Ron Paul gets the GOP nomination.

Because conservatives are "traditionalists" by nature. They feel intensley that a woman should cook, clean, nurse babies, and are incapable of logic when making tough decisions.
Obviously this is wrong...and will soon be corrected.
Hillary has my vote..not because she's a woman, but because I agree with her platform and she is intelligent and competent.

Because conservative Americans are not ready for a female president. They feel the woman belongs at home or in the kitchen. They don't feel a woman can lead as effectively as a man. Go Hillary!

The right woman hasn't come along yet.
It amazes me that in trying to explain why there 'might' be repression against women, morons resort to bigotry in their answers. How 'enlightened' does that make you?

We don't have one yet, and Hillary isn't it.
Condi Rice would be a much better choice, if she'd run.
