It is a fascinating story and the best account of it is a classic first published in 1937 , "Red Star Over China' by Edgar Snow. He was an American journalist in China in those years and wrote what was virtually a first hand account. More modern accounts tend to be revisionist , based on Chinese or Soviet sources with political axes to grind long after the events actually occurred.
The book may still be in print, if not a good library should be able to get it for you.
