Since education is about looking at things from different perspectives, the only way to get a really good education is to be among a variety of different types of people who think in many different ways. Obviously, you can have a unique perspective on something without being a person of color and you can be a person of color with very mainstream views, but the more diverse the population is on all dimensions, the more likely it is that all perspectives will be brought into play.

I loved it (I'm white) but I also grew up in a diverse town so I've learned to appreciate all the wonderful colors and ethnicities in the world. Growing up my best friends were all varied races and we would alternate going to each others houses at least once a week so we could have Mexican, Italian, Soul food, Vietnamese and at my house some good old southern home cooking. I loved the various experiences at each others homes.
I took that philosophy with me to college and now in to my career. I now work at a company that is predominantly Phillipino and Punjabi and I am LOVING getting to know these two new cultures. Its fascinating. As long as you embrace peoples differences and immerse yourself in learning who they are (not what you think they are) you will always gain by stepping outside your comfort zone and getting to know the world!
