Beginning in 1920 a team of farm boys down South that would become known as the "hog boys" consistently won races. The group had a hog, or pig as their mascot. Following a win, they would put the pig (a real one) on the back of their Harley and take a victory lap. In 1983, an organization was formed, taking advantage of the long-standing nickname by turning "hog" into the acronym H.O.G., for Harley Owners Group. Many Harley-Davidson enthusiasts capitalize the word to make "Hog" and consider this term the sole property of H-D.

Harley-Davidson attempted to trademark "hog," but in 1999 ultimately lost the case, with the appellate panel ruling that "hog" had become a generic term for large motorcycles, and is therefore unprotectable as a trademark.

On August 15, 2006, Harley Davidson Inc. had its NYSE ticker symbol changed from HDI to HOG.

Why do the dorks on these boards have to be so insulting. Why is it impossible to accept that someone made a different choice than they did and just live with it. I don't personally ride a harley( I have a Honda), but I do hear fellow rider talk about the Harley arrogance from a few harley riders, well this is no different. A Honda is no better than a BMW or a Harley. If you are arrogant about the brand you ride , you are a fool regardless of the brand. And if you are insulting people for their choices, then who is really the pig?
Sorry I know this isn't the answer, and this answer isn't aimed at the questioner but to the answers.

Back in the 20's, the "hog" association started when the racing team's mascot, a pig, is carried on a victory lap after each race won by the team.

All you Harley haters can yap all you want. But if it wasn't for us hardcore bikers in the early 70's the EPA and NHTSA would have outlawed motorcycles all together. So you owe it to us that you have a right to ride. When was the last time any of you rode en mass on your state capitol to demand your voice be heard? Yeah, that's what I thought.

To be honest, it looks like your first answerer read the book. Or at least the website.

As for the rest, they remind me of the noise that used to come from the pen, when I actually raised pigs.

It's easy to insult, it hides a total lack of knowledge. Or so it is believed by some.

Well if you look at the guys that drive them they tend to be heavy set. So legend has it that a bunch of waitresses would see a bunch of bikers pulling up and one said "Hey Madge look, here comes the hogs!" After all the waitresses stopped laughing they bikers came in.

The waitress asked what they wanted to eat and the fat harley rider said, and I quote "I'll have the fettuccine alfredo and a glass of milk, a side of mayonaise and some pudding, oh and bring me a diet coke."

Thus the legend was created and that's the honest truth of why they are called HOG You can trust me that this story is true because I am a Democrat.

Because a Harley is big and strong and drinks alot of gasoline when driven hard. and when a side-car is attached to the Harley it don`t mind, it keeps on pulling that lil car and rider effortlessly because of the big heavy flywheel momentum in that big engine.

EDIT: FIRECRACKER, easy on the insults... What do you say I race you, eh ? the answer I gave comes from B. Yates, senior editor of Car and Driver, but what the hell would he know ? just another ignorant squealing pig making noises which express his stupidity.
EDIT2: you are on... you pick the road... :):):) , yes, the pigs do get a very bad rap, I agree with you... they are *very* clever... and most people do not know they are very clean animals...
