Turkey is not and never has been since they came off the steeps of the eat deserts.
And the fools who say they are can claim to be just stupid for never learning in history class.

A country is a democracy if the people are allowed to choose their leaders.
Freedom of speech is important because it allows the voters to make informed decisions. In other words, all involved have the right to say anything they want, and the voters can judge based on what they hear.
When Turkey (or any other country) infringes upon this freedom, they do harm to their people and their ability to honestly evaluate candidates and issues.
One of the hallmarks of a dictatorship is control of the media. Whenever you hear about a country converting to state ownership the entire news media, it's on the road to tyranny.
(Ironically, liberals are doing the same thing in this country. They are livid about the monopoly that conservatives have in talk radio, but they fail to understand that liberal radio shows are so mean and hateful that they can't attract listeners, examples include Air America, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton. There was also a feminist show that really bombed badly this year.)

America is a republic. We have freedom of political speech. Freedom as intended in our Constitution is freedom from federal governmental opression.
We have freedom to discuss differnt political ideas but we do not have the freedom to shout fire in crowded movie theater. Freedom and liberty as described in our Constitution is often confused by people on the left.
We have freedom of politcal speech. It is expressed all the time by different radical groups.
Look up "code pink"
the history of the ACLU
ect.
If there is no freedom of political speech there can be no democracy.

A Democracy or Democratic system of government is one in which the people, either directly (popular vote) or indirectly (ie electors) get to choose thier leaders. It has nothing to do with the right to free speech. In the U.S., we just happen to have the right to free speech, while also being a Democratic Republic. We're lucky enough to have both.
