I've used tempura and poster paint and they both worked well. Be sure and get the regular poster paint and not the washable stuff...that doesn't work so well.
Have fun.

Acrylic works best for me. I use FolkArt acrylics because they are thick, cover nicely, don't drip and have vibrant colors.
I've also used paint pens for outlining and other small details.
And make sure to give your newly painted pumpkin a coat or two of indoor/outdoor sealer to prevent early cracking and peeling.

I think the best type of paint to use to paint pumpkins is acrylic and this is one of the best acrylic paints: http://www.amazon.com/Liquitex-Acrylic-Paint/dp/B000JESVA8/?ie=UTF8&tag=600673-20
You have plenty of vibrant colors to choose from. This is quality paint so it won't drip like the cheaper ones. It's one of the best ones you can buy.

I use left-over exterior house paint from all my neighbors. Then I scrape it off and throw it away before I compost the pumpkins.

acrylic works pretty well, and its easy to find at a craft store like joann or michaels or even walmart. its thick so you wont have to keep recoating your what u painted and it dries pretty quickly, ends up looking in-between shiny n matte. hope this helped good luck
