I have often found that when the charts aren't inspiring me to buy any albums I look to the past. I would recommend going back in time and discovering some of the great artists of the past. I found that listening to stuff my parents listened to is good too. Some to try are:

The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
The Eagles
Bread
The Byrds
Queen
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Eurythmics
early Madonna
Spandau Ballet
Duran Duran
Linda Ronstadt
Heart
INXS
Kenny Rogers
Dusty Springfield
Pet Shop Boys
The Supremes
Rod Stewart
Eric Clapton
Bruce Springsteen
Billy Joel
Madness

Oh and the other suggestion you got of Weird Al on YouTube is an excellent idea - they are so funny. I love the Ebay song (Tell me why - I bought that Alf alarm clock....)and his Star Wars version of American Pie. "oh my my this here Anakin guy, may be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry".....
You can easily waste an hour listening and laughing to those.

Indie - like the Kooks, Arctic Monkeys, Snow Patrol, Razorlight, the Hoosiers. I like this music cos it all has a tune so it's the opposite to rap, but it's not heavy rock or anything. Plus, the bands can actually write their own stuff and play their own instruments! It's getting really popular atm.
Here's some links of some of their most well known tracks:
Arctic Monkeys- Flurescent Adolescent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N64QMKEbJQg
Snow Patrol-Chasing Cars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxXwIIBlSgw
The Hoosiers-Worried about Ray: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSlHGK-n4_Y
The Kooks-She moves in her own way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecc9pcjJTpk
And if you dont like hip hop, rap, rock *or* indie then you're not left with much! Just odlie pop stuff. So hope you like indie!

Punk/funk/rock/alternative is the best. Especially Red Hot Chili Peppers because they incorperate the lot! (And are amazing)
