godaddy.com lets you pay 10$ for a domain name. You can get it hosted fo free at freehostia.com :)

If you buy, just the name ("domain name registration" it's called, and you can "google it") you can find it for as little as $7 per year, maybe less. You have to, of course, pick a www.__.com name somebody else doesn't already have! If you find one (that is, you're creative enough to think of one) that's available, then quick, snatch it up and reserve it (register it) right away!

Then you can go about the business of finding hosting services, often free, somewhere else. Yearly "domain name" registration and then free hosting elsewhere is I think the least expensive way to go! (Once you get your name registered, you can always change your hosting, later...it's more flexible that way!)

I normally tell people to buy their names at godaddy but I would suggest to you that you just get hosting at my web host as the middle of the road linux plan is about $100 a year but offers more space, features and databases then you will probably need. It will also allow you to host multiple separate domain names with static dedicated IP addresses. The middle plan I believe also offers two domain name registrations as well.

You can find out more from the link I have on my web page at http://www.lakeareawebs.com/links.html
