First thing you do is design it. Look at reviews for the various components you're considering. Building a computer isn't like putting a model together. The real work takes place after you slap all the parts together and hit the power button for the first time. Make sure that you get a great motherboard because they are the biggest pain to replace and usually means reinstalling the OS if you do. Should have a usable computer around where you have access to the net in case you need to check something out while building. Lots of step by step building help you can get just by googling it. Main thing is to do your homework first.

yeah, im gonna build one for christmas..... like every1 else is sayin, just read up on it as much as u can b4 u try it.... dont just read 1 tutorial and think u are good.... many of them leave out details that others cover, and it goes both ways
