this isnt necessarily true, if you follow a complete stereotype then yes, butttt most stereotypes are exaggerated but nationality's do follow those traits........

for example pleaaaase dont get offended, buuut out of all the germans i have met (which is actually quite a few) they have had really terrible senses of humour, and when they do is very dry.

Greeks and Italians that i have met are very very noisy people.

How many French people do we know who wont speak a word of english until you attempt some french........

i mean that these are some stereotypes which have proved right in my experience although this has not hindered my feelings towards the many foreign friends i have made.

Fakadou, you answered your own question, "do you live up to all white stereotypes" no one will fulfill all the criteria of a stereotype but you will fill alot.

Its normal and efficient to make assumptions about a lot of different things. What is important is to avoid making bad assumptions, and to incorrectly apply them.

It's okay to assume that a pothole will damage your tire, even if the probability is only 50%, unless you repeatedly take an alternate route that involves a 60% chance of equal or worse damage to your car. In the long run, you will be worse off.

Apply this concept both to your own interests and to the interests of society as a whole. Regarding your interests, an example is that stereotyping attractive blonde women in business as being there because of their looks, and not being good at their jobs, might cause you to ignore the advice of someone who is blonde, and you end up suffering a loss or missing an opportunity because that particular person's advice was good.

Society's interests are not met either, in that unless I've missed something in the news, there should probably be about as many smart blondes as redheads and brunettes, and failing to hire qualified blondes for engineering jobs lets say, would cause society to have a certain percentage of underemployed engineers, which would be a waste.

It is the lack of understanding the people in our world that leads to stereotyping. How is it possible that intelligent and good people have failed to realize that there are differences in other people around the world and not paused to educate themselves in these matters? People are fundamentally the same. We all want to have the same things and possess attributes that will lead to a good life. We want the same things for our children, our elderly and our dis-enfranchised. Can we one day understand that people go about doing things differently even when we want to reach the same goals?

What we don't understand, we loathe and what we loathe, we stereotype. It's complete and utter madness!

Where do you think stereotypes come from then? Do you suppose that one person thinks them up and they spread throughout the population like Chinese Whispers.

An intelligent person can accept stereotypes exist but still understand that there will be variances between people.

Well certain groups of people do have certain characteristics. So we can use universal sorts of stereotypes as a of basis to understand. But not as a rigid measure. We do need to notice and understand difference even if we don't agree with certain aspects of behaviour. This is not a cut and dried subject.

Stereotypes are generally a result of ignorance, isolation, and over-generalizations.

Amber - stereotypes don't make any sense. Do you live up to all the white stereotypes?

I tend not to stereotype people ... but digging into their cultural history helps understanding a common link... you can call it a stereotype but it's bigger then that.
For example, if you read the history of Afghanistan... you would see that there has almost never been a period of peace there... so it's natural if most of the people there tend to condone violence

Stereotypes wouldn't be around if there wasn't any truth to them
However, if you think stereotypes are a generalization or a representation of certain individuals as a whole that's when you've really done messed up now!!!
