They do look to the left and up as they are accessing the part of the brain which deals with imagination. If they are accessing memories for actual events then they would look right and up. This is a fact due to research done by the FBI behavioural analysis unit

It's kind of like with poker, each person has their distinct tells. Apparently mine is not looking to the side or blinking, but my eyes look up. It really just depends on the person as to what the tell is. As for the looking away, probably they are scared that their eyes will reveal their deception.

People who are lying are trying to avoid eye contact. If you are to their right, they will look towards the left to avoid looking at you. If you are to their left, they'll do the opposite. Look at Susan Smith when she was pleading for the return of her two little boys. Notice how she avoided looking directly into the cameras? That was because she was lying through her teeth. She knew exactly what happened to them.

Actually the way I learned it in my Psychology classes is that they look down and to the left most of the time when they are lying. I've seen it work to I use it to tell a lot of the times if my children are bine honest with me!

I wouldn't jump to any such conclusions....I mean..a confidant lier who probably knows all this will look you straight in the eye...and there might be others who are looking at something on side while telling the truth! :-) So it is dangerous to form quick conclusions I feel.

But, interesting point, yes.

it is to do with the side of the brain that is memory and the other side of the brain that deals with your imagination. TRUTH comes from your memory, LIES are fiction.

the left side of the brain is creative thats why they look left.

the right side is your educational side so to speak, and if you look to the right you are usually reflecting on an experience.

it depend on people. i notice that i look up on the ceiling rather than looking to the side. it's probably because they can't face the look on the face of people that believe them

but anyway, it takes two to lie. one to lie and one to listen
