I recently asked a question about wearing a vest to the gym and got a lot of answers wondering why on earth you would wear a vest to the gym. I'm assuming they were American so can anyone tell me what Americans call a vest?

In the UK a vest is a t-shirt with no arms by the way, is it something different in the US?

Here is my original question btw http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvUBm.yeFUyGcdQg7xDCCpfsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071019112007AAv7oNl

In the US a vest is a sleeveless jacket, more substantial than a t-shirt. It has closures up the front. For instance, part 3 of a three piece suit, or those puffy ski clothing items without sleeves.
What you are describing is a tank top or a muscle shirt (a sleeveless shirt) to us.

In the UK a vest is an undershirt - the equivalent in american slang of a "wife beater"- it is a common undergarment for men, worn under shirts and jumpers (sweaters) and has been for a very long time. (Also worn by children, when we were kids mum would always put us in a vest under our clothes to keep us warm.) The buttoned sleeveless item of clothing worn with a three piece suit is called a waistcoat in the uk. So you will get some funny looks over there if you call your waistcoat a vest.

To Americans, a vest, although it has no arms, is considered to be a sleeveless shell-like (usually buttons up) top over a dressy shirt. Think 3 piece suit. They make sweater vests and other types, but the linking trait is that they are made to be worn OVER something. What you are talking about is just a sleeveless shirt or a tank top. American guys wear sleeveless shirts NOT tank tops.

A vest is normally part of a 3 piece suit. A sleeveless garment worn over the shirt and under the sport coat. Normally made of the same material as the coat.

A vest is something that you wear over a shirt or sweater. It does not have arms and either zips or buttons up in the front. They are often a part of a man's suit, or for fashion. Many people have "puffy" ones that they wear outside to keep warm.

Yeah! Alot different. An Vest is a down, flannel, or cotton sweater with no sleeves. They are ment to keep you warm in the winter over a sweater or a sweatshirt. Some are fashion statement but... What your talking about is called a tank top here. JSUK.

Yes, its different over here. It's part of a man's suit. A vest is the armless, buttoned garment worn between a coat and shirt.

Try asking us what trainers are next. You'll probably get some fun answers with that!

A vest is a sleeveless piece of clothing that buttons up the front. The front side is usually made of a nice material, sometimes patterned. The back is usually made of a smooth thinner material and sometimes can be belted to alter size. This piece of clothing is best known for being the third piece of a three piece suit.

I would not consider a vest as a t-shirt without arms. More like a light jacket without arms.

So, you are on the right track, but I dont think it would be something you would wear to the gym...
