Johnson was sworn in later on Air Force One.

Yes, the VP gets sworn in officially later but Johnson was immediately the replacement.

Although in Johnson's case, this "promotion" did not come as a surprise, if you know what I mean.

The scrambled jets were BS for the public's sake. If they were so worried about the Russians (etc) they would of protected JFK as protocol dictated that day.

Things were terribly fishy with that whole thing.

The transition was quick Johnson actually got power the second JFK expired. Shortly afterward he was sworn in aboard the Presidential Jet. I remember it as if it was yesterday. What a tragedy.

Vice President Johnson was sworn in on a airplane. It must have been very soon after the shooting, because First Lady Jackie Kennedy was there with blood on her dress. At first they had a hard time finding a copy of the oath he was supposed to take. It's in the Constitution.

People can say that Johnson was responsible for the murder. He wasn't. He went to his grave believing the assassination was the result of a conspiracy. It took decades for the dust to settle, but the truth can be much stranger than fiction. Kennedy was a target of opportunity for a homicidal nut. The homicidal nut then became a target of opportunity for another homicidal nut. Unbelievable, but that's what happened. Jack Ruby, who shot Oswald on TV, was reputed to have Mafia connections. Sure he met a few gangsters in his life, but he was too flaky for any of them to want him for a business associate.

Yes. Johnston (who HATED JFK), was hastily sworn in on Air Force One moments after JFK's murder, while the plane was preparing to taxi and take off back to Washington.

Johnston left D.C. as Vice President and returned as President.

I look at the vintage TV news coverage of him speaking--and I fail to see any degree of genuine sincerity of sorrow from Johnston. Lady Bird looked scared witless---and it's been theorized she, Jackie and surviving Kennedy family all know the truth behind JFK's murder. Alas: we aren't allowed to learn of such information.

When a President is incapacitated, the VP becomes acting President immediately. He was sworn in after Kennedy died. There was a greta deal of concern and panic that the Russians were behind it and they scrambled bombers and hurried other cabinet members to safe locals.

Johnson was sworn in after it was announced that Kennedy was dead and his remains were on Airforce One to be carried to Bethesda. It was not until 1967 when the 25th Amendment was passed which gave the Presidential line of succession.

They had to get a special order from the judiciary in order to authorize the temporary power transfer.
