For a company to hire a temporary worker without having to go through an agency?

I see alot of ads on such places on craigslist.com for temporary workers...was wondering why the heck agencies even exist if people can just hire temps basically off the street

Most companies need someone "tested" for a short time and don't have the resources to go thru a hiring process; or need them fast.

Yes, it would be legal for a company to hire a temporary employee without going through an agency. Around the holidays retail stores hire tons of temporary employees.

Yes, a number of companies (most major airlines do) hire people who are part time or may even be seasonal workers.

The purpose of an agency is that they do the skills testing and background check on their applicants for the employer. (At least they are supposed to do them) This saves the employer the time for placing the ad, sifting through resumes, interviewing and then screening through applicants. Also, if the person is not working out they can just make a phone call to their agency and tell them to call that person at home in the evening and not to come back to work.

Sure it's legal to hire a temp employee directly. Many companies hire through agencies because the agency has competent people available who have been screened for having the job skills needed.

It is easier for a Company to hire temps through an agency than doing it themselves.

Placing them on the payroll, paying all state, federal, and local taxes, etc. etc. Terminating them and going through the whole process again, when you hire through an agency,

No expense in putting them on and if they do not work out just say, don't need you anymore and call agency for another one.

It's 110% legal. It actually saves the company quite a bit of money hiring in this manner. For example, the temporary worker would not be entitled to company benefits saving thousands of dollars nor do they have to worry about any legal repercussions if they decide to immediately terminate. Not that a termination calls for legal recourse, but there are former employees who feel they were wronged and pursue legal action although they may not have any grounds.

Have a friend sign up at a agency. Then when they find out where there's jobs available you go and apply for the job. That way you won't have to give the agency any money.

It is legal, but a big hassle and involves a lot of paperwork. Also, there are tax and insurance implications. Most find it cheaper or easier to use agencies.

You are employeed by the temp. agency then. The company does not have to interview you, have you fill out forms, add you to their own comp insurance, etc...
