I usually send a hand written note rather than an e mail that may get caught up in the company spam blocking programs. I thank them for the time that they spent with me and say that I look forward to hearing from them soon. I might mention how pleased I was that my experience/qualifications would allow me to be an asset to their firm. (add specific circumstance if applicable). You don't negotiate wages until they offer you the job. Know what the market pays for those jobs in your area with your experience so that you know what your salary range is Usually you would not want to take less than you are making of course. Don't get too carried away because they will probably verify salary on your past jobs. Remember this is the best time to get a good increase. After you are employed you only usually get annual reviews.

A hand written thank you, and how you are looking foreward to their contacting you in the near future, or if not, you will follow up yourself.
