it's called the serpentine belt and yes you can replace it by taking the tension off the tensioner pulley and the belt will come right off and there should be a routing diagraphm for the belt on your inner fenderwell or on the inside of the hood to get it routed right to put back on, just route the belt and pull the tensioner back again and when the belt is all routed right just let loose of the tensioner and your done.

It wears out with time and use. Definately replace it. It is quite easy to do this job but the main issues are the limited space to work in under the hood especially in front wheel drive vehicles. The idea of adding stuff like spray onto the belt is asking for trouble. If it slips let it slip but replace it as soon as you can. Some vehicles require replacement tensioners (if your vehicle uses one) at the same time as replacing the belt so make sure you research the exact arrangement for your vehicle.

There is a product that they sell at auto parts store called "Belt Dressing" that you can spray on there and it may help. I had this happen before and tried everything but you just have to deal with it. Or replace the belt which can be exspensive with labor etc.

As long as the belt looks ok then you just need to tighten it using the adjuster.
This can be quite simple on some cars and a pain in the **** on others, so if you are unsure just ask your local garage and they should be able to sort it out while you wait.

It's an easy repair. All you need is some wrenches of the proper size, a few minutes time, a properly sized replacement belt and some basic mechanical skills. Good luck!

some belts just do that and nothing can be done about it. My '02 Explorer does it every time it rains but it goes away. It has nothing to do with anything breaking or wearing out. The same went with my '99 Grand Prix GTP...

here is an old trick to quieting squeaky belts ,take a bar of soap and with the motor running carefully apply the bar of soap to the belt this will quieten the belt and make it last a little longer before you have to replace it if it is a serpentine belt you'll have to apply the bar to both sides of the belt

O.K. you may have a belt that needs replacing. If you can tighten it by loosening a nut and prying the alternator the tighten the belt if you have an automatic tensioner then it may of gotten weak and needs replacing.
