Does going to college or universities automatically proves/mean that you're smart?

Honestly, if you make it through college with good grades, that IS an indication that you have a good head on your shoulders. However, there are many intelligent people out there who never went to college.

And to the person that asked, Bill Gates dropped out of college, but he finished high school.

No.

But then, that's not what college is for.

I've known a lot of smart people who, for various reasons, never went to college.

And I've known some really dense PhDs.

On the whole, by and large people who go to college tend to be smarter than people who didn't; but there are so many exceptions, college is hardly proof.

Not necessarily. I've known folks who are brilliant....but have no common sense. YOu know the kind, they are rocket scientists but can't figure out how to make toast. On the other hand, I have two uncles, neither of whom completed college who are two of the most intelligent people I've ever known.

College and university can help you learn how to think and can introduce you to ideas you might never have been exposed to otherwise...but it can't prove you are smart.

Sometimes but usually not. Many who are in college or uni are only there because of polcor (political correctness) laws not because they have a brain. At least here in Brit, to be honest I don't know if the same holds in the US.

Nope. There are a LOT of really dumb people whose parents can afford to get them through college without scholarships. My ex-roomie for one.

If you can get through college with a full scholarship and graduate with honors, then you're probably smarter than the average bear.

No. Some of the dumbest people I have ever met have degrees. Some of the smartest ones don't.

No. Why do people in university smoke, drink, and do drugs? Because they are stupid.
