A true fan has loyalty and commitment to there team, win or lose.
A true fan learns things about there team, so when asked a question they don't look like a jackass.
A true fan is someone who watches there team the next year, even if the year before they sucked.

A guy that will sit through a 2 hour rain delay on a night game that is being played in a northern city early in the season is a true fan
A guy that sticks around for the bottom of the 9th despite his team being behind by 12 runs and the bottom of the order coming up is a true fan

A fan that goes for their team no matter how good or bad they are doing. I think the Yankees should make a run at the 2008 World Series.

You can be a fan of a team and not a fan of baseball itself. When a team is doing well and gets a lot of press it catches the attention of non fans and they jump on the "bandwagon" to be part of the action. To be a true FAN (FANatic) I believe you first have to love the game and the natural progression from there is to support a team. And when you support a team that means both good times and bad times. You now love the game of baseball and support a favorite team. When you add to that your desire to learn more about the history of the game and come to appreciate all that has come before, you are a true fan. Those that don't have a desire to reach these levels are casual observers and followers of the game but not a FANatic.

Win or lose, you support your team. You don't have to root for a team in your hometown or state, root for whoever you want but be supportive win or lose. 2008 WS winner, I can't determine that until I know who will be back from my team, Yankees. I know this is a baseball question but I live in Northern Va(Washington Redskins, the home team) & you would not believe the # of Giants & Cowboy fans are in my area. Like I said, you don't have to like your home team in any sport but who ever you support, be a loyal fan & support your team, win or lose

All of these answers are good.
1) You gotta love your team no matter what. First place, last place, everywhere in between. If they trade everyone on your team to somewhere else (Boston OR BALTIMORE) you hate those guys like they were HITLER!! You learn all the new guys and watch them grow up to be a team who is up by a game in he ALCS and thank God you didn't quit lovin' them when they were nobody. Oh yeah. and you still gotta love 'em when there are 3 STUPID movies made about them and how BAD they played in the 80s. If you survive that you are a true fan.
2) If not you're a Yankee's fan.

Come sit with me behind the dugout at Kaufmann Stadium through all 81 Royals home games and you'll see what a true fan is. In case you couldn't tell, Kansas City is my favorite team. As far as the 2008 World Series, I'm going to go out on a limb and say Atlanta.

Yep. Loyalty. Or: Cleveland fans. Most of us, that is. I am engaged now, and haven't been able to make it to a game since May or June, but you better believe I will be going next year. Where were all those fans that are filling up the Jake now in the beginning/middle of the season when there were only 20k people per night? I consider myself to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest Indians fans in the world. I don't care if they're in last place or first place, I'll still love them. Heck, I still love the Browns!

Someone who truly loves the nuances of the game - and is there supporting their team through thick and thin.
I should know, I am a lifelong Detroit Tigers fan and always will be. Probably the most telling sign of my fanhood is not that I had a season ticket package in 2003 (the year they lost 119 games) - but that I had one again in 2004 and 2005.
