a lot of swords nowadays are being made out of stainless steel and high carbon steel, but what would be an extremely tough metal to make a sword out of so it would be tough enough to slice through concrete, trees, and metal without marring the blade?

Good old high-carbon steel is about the best you'll find.

Unfortunately, even the hardest metals/alloys wouldn't make a sword that could slice through concrete, trees, etc. without marring the blade.

However, if you want a process that will make an incredibly strong sword that would hold a sharp edge, then look into metallic glass. It isn't really "glass", but the process of cooling the allow doesn't give the atoms time to align themselves into a crystalline pattern, so you have an amorphic arrangement. This would be like folding the metal on the molecular level--very strong. Some of the alloys have to be cooled *very* quickly, but newer ones may be cooled more slowly, which could lead to industrial production in the future.

Different types/grades of stainless and high carbon steels are the best materials to make a sword out of. It's more the manufacturing of the sword that makes a good material into a great sword. The more times the metal is heated, pounded, folded, and quenched is what will give it seemingly endless strength.

The best metal to make swords out of would be tin foil. That way they won't hurt anything and you can use the scraps for the kind of hat you are wearing when running around with a sword.

I mean.. come on, man, if you want to hurt and kill people and destroy stuff, do it right. Get yourself a reliable machine gun. Way more efficient than swords. In WW I a single machine gun easily took out a hundred idiots running around with swords. And trees are no match for a 20mm Gatling gun, either. Way more fun than an ax! Concrete? 500lbs laser guided bomb. Still not satisfied? How about a nuke?

Jeez... swords...
