He's in late thirties. We're not particularly close but I am with the rest of the family, however he came to visit me when I was sick and so I feel I should return the favour. And I don't want to show up empty handed.

He doesn't really have any hobbies so I don't have much to go on.

Please bear in mind its 7pm on a Friday evening here so my choices for shops are quite limited.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Take him something to read, maybe a magazine. Here are some titles a guy might like:
American Street Rodder, ESPN The Magazine, Golf Digest,
Sports Illustrated, plus many more.

Comic Books or Magazines, Newspapers, Hand Held video game something he can do to keep him occupied when everyone leaves

The right choice is a book. Try to find which are his favorite themes, and make sure you don't give him one that he already has.

a basket of fruit and one of his fav magazine...you know how bored to stay in hospital right?...or you can bring him your mp3 player with some of his fav songs....
