sorry

back in the day, 1975 or so, when I was into skateboarding, we used them for transportation and we tried to just keep them on the ground and not fall off

You are having trouble sliding your front foot up because you need to learn to shift your weight off of it temporarily as you jump. You cannot slide it too soon.

Your back foot should be on the tail at the point right before it hangs off the edge, and your front foot should be about halfway down the skateboard. You may feel a little unbalanced like this, but it will become easier with time.

Next, you must crouch down slightly, bending at the knees (you can put your hands out slightly to help keep your balance). The basic ollie involves a quick shift in balance. Start off leaning back with a strong push down upon the tail so it touches the ground. Just as quickly as you have done that, jump up while sliding your front foot up towards the nose or front of the skateboard. Your board will be at an angle by now. The last part involves pushing down with your front foot to level out the board. The higher you jump, the higher your ollie will be. You must do all these steps in one single fluid motion, and this should result in a snapping of your board upon the ground causing it to jump up into the air underneath your feet. That’s all there is to it.

Of course you can. I skate my non-SB Adidas and Nike all the time. Shoot, I even skate my Seavees sometimes and do tricks. Some fabrics will wear, and the stitching along the bottom inch of your sneaker will be shredded off from griptape. I still skate my non-SB sneakers and have been doing it since I last purchased Nike SB Zoom Tre s (those were my only favorite skate sneaekers, I had 3-4 pairs when they were new) and have no problem skating around or doing tricks. In fact, I skate 13mile trips from Brooklyn to my place in Manhattan, NY every week with non skateboarding sneakers, doing ollies and slowing down/stopping with the sole of sneaker as opposed to the tail. Go for it. Skate kicks are just designed to not tear and have better, tighter foot feel (puffy lips for example are for that reason) and it s also designed to not "grip" the griptape as many sneakers will do but it isn t a big deal.

To start doing ollies, do not focus on sliding your front foot. Focus on giving the tail a good pop, and jumping right immediately. When doing your first ollies, they will no tbe high so you don't have to worry much about the landing. You will just land on it. Just try staying on the same place where you popped it. Keep practicing until you get it, and then, your ollis will get higher and higher as you keep practicing.
