I put stuff out in front of my house on "heavy trash" days. People come by and sort through it and pull out what they find interesting. Those outdoor grill propane containers go fast, as they are metal, and apparently useful in garnering extra cash for the people who go to the effort of acquiring them in this manner.

What's left over is picked up by the heavy-trash trucks, presumably taken to other sorting areas and/or dumped.
